The tooth profile of bevel gears is similar to that of cylindrical gears, except that a base cone is used instead of a base cylinder. When the generating surface S undergoes pure rolling along the base cone, any straight line OK that contacts the generatrix ON of the base cone on the generating surface will form an involute surface in space, which is the tooth profile surface of the spur bevel gear. The points on the involute NK are equidistant from the cone top O, so the involute must be on a spherical surface with the cone top O as the center and OK as the radius, that is, NK is a spherical involute.
